What is Natural Gas Liquefaction?
Liquefaction is the process of cooling down natural gas from ambient temperature to its liquid temperature of -260 degrees F/-162 degrees C. Natural Gas is liquefied for transportation purposes when a pipeline is not available. The volume of natural gas in its liquid state is about 600 times smaller than in its gaseous state. Liquifying natural gas allows for more economic and practical storage and transport over great distance.
Natural gas is typically transported in liquid form when vast distances, geological conditions or political issues do not allow for the construction of pipelines.
Liquifying natural gas also provides several environmental benefits. During the refrigeration of the gas feed, several impurities such as heavier hydrocarbons, heavy metals (mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium) & nitrogen/sulfur oxides are removed. This purification step not only improves the heat value of gas but also makes the cleanest burning fossil-fuel even cleaner. The removal of contaminants and particulates, improved transportation efficiency versus gas phase, and displacement of heavy fossil fuels facilitated by “portable pipeline” accessibility, all combine to make LNG an eco-conscious and lower carbon footprint fuel choice.
Why Choose Chemtex for LNG?
Working closely with our technology partners, Chart Industries, we are able to offer total EPC single-window solution to develop projects, including feasibility studies, state-of-the-art technology tailored for feedstock, capacity & location, basic & detailed engineering, procurement, construction, training, plant commissioning & startup, performance guarantees & warranties.
The use of high efficiency refrigeration compressors, heat exchange equipment, and the practice of continuous engineering improvement all lower resource demand & maximize efficiency.

Floating Natural Gas Liquefaction
In addition to land-based applications, Chemtex offers fully-fitted Floating LNG (FLNG) barges, engineered for on-the-water natural gas liquefaction. These barges can be deployed to target off-shore natural gas pockets, facilitating mobile extraction, liquefaction & offloading.
Our offering couples Chemtex engineering around the Chart IPSMR® Process with our shipbuilding partner to deliver fully functional FLNG barges tailored to each client’s target capacity and gas specification. Outfitted with on-board power generation & LNG storage, Chemtex supplied FLNG barges provide cost effective, self-sustaining solutions for off-shore gas extraction.
LNG Storage Tanks
Chemtex includes in our technology offering LNG Storage tanks ranging in capacity from 5,000-60,000 m3, including LNG send-out, cryogenic loading, and re-gasification. Catering to various client needs, we offer site specific designs such as single, double or full containment, for land-based or FLNG applications.
Utilizing industry-leading insulation materials and innovative design principles, the tanks maintain the containment integrity and thermal performance necessary for safe LNG storage. Each tank we supply comes equipped with complete monitoring and safety relief systems to ensure reliability and secure operation. Our commitment to technological excellence ensures reliable storage solutions that meet the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance.
